Alaska has been found to have a high fetal alcohol syndrome rate and to combat this restaurants and bars will soon be stocking women’s restrooms with free pregnancy tests. Senator Pete Kelly came up with the idea. The bill is a two year grant funded in the amount of 400K by the University of Alaska. They will be conducting the study to see if pregnancy test dispensers will help women make the right choice vs. just having posters adorning the bathroom walls with warnings against drinking while pregnant. The tests will cost the state approximately $1.50 each. The effectiveness of this bill lowering fetal alcohol syndrome will take some time to see. Until then women who go to these establishments and choose not to take advantage of these free pregnancy tests will be choosing ignorance over knowledge. Why wouldn’t women take advantage of this as who would want to cause fetal alcohol syndrome?
